The nervous system is made up of two parts that contain billions of neurons which are the cells that transmit electrical signals around the body.

The first part is the central nervous system which contains the brain and spinal cord which is made up of fibres like a rope.
The other part is the peripheral nervous system which connects the spinal cord to muscles and receptors in the skin.
Each neuron has tiny tree like structures that receive signals and then they pass the communication to other neurons which are insulated to keep the communication going along the nerve.
There are chemical and electrical signals being sent at high speed all the time, thousands of signals are sent every minute and your brain is the control centre and helps you receive them in a co-ordinated way.
The brain contains about 85 billion neurons and there are lots of different types of neurons but they all transmit signals or fail to transmit signals.
This requires a huge amount of nutrients and energy and so if you run low on any of these your brain ceases to function so quickly. Modern life puts a huge amount of stress on the body and nervous system compared to life just 20 years ago.
